THE HONOURS LIST.

MILITARY MEDAL AWARDS. EXPLOITS OF SERGEANT "" SIMMERS. V A [From Oue Corubsponbent.] TIMARU, September 22. ' The cabled list of those awarded military medals contains the' name Sergeant Robert Simmers, of the Rifle Brigade. The Sergeant is the eon of Mr G. A. Simmers, formerly headmaster of the Tiinaru High School, and is twenty-three years of age. He enlisted from Dannevirke, where he was employed on survey work. ; The incident which resulted in Sergeant Simmers obtaining his decoration occurred late in July, ft is mentioned in a letter dated July 29/which Mrs Simmers has received from her < son. Sergeant Simmers remarks quite casually that his major has told him that he has been recommended for "some medal or other," and he gives his modest story in these words:— "Tfc9 other night I took out a fightinc p&trol into 'No Man's Land,' and had quite an experience. I suppose you know that 'No Man's Land' is tho territory between the enemy's trenches and ours. We went out first to v look for a wounded man, and after that to fight any Huns we saw. I believe Fritz used the wounded man as a decoy, for he had a big party waiting for,us hidden in the grass and thistles. Tp cut a short story shorter, he lobbed over a score of bombs in amongst us, and we could not see where they were coming from. Five of us stuck it out, and found the wounded man, and after a three hours 1 wait, with Bursts of machine-gun fire playing over and around us, support and stretcher-bear-ers came. The fire of us were mentioned in dispatches.' Three of us were Dannevirke boys."
