MEETINGS OF SOCIETIES.

The Scottish Society held a " members’ night ” lest evening, to which ladies were invited. Chief J. Williamson presided, and there was a largo attendance. Mr Robert Waterson gave an address on “ Poetry ” and The Ettrick Shepherd,” in which he dealt interestingly with the works of the latter.

The Canterbury Caledonian Society’s fortnight? eoci.il WU3 held on Wednesday evening in their rooms, Worcester Street. There was a large attendance. Mr C. S. Thomas, president of tho society, in the course of his remarks, referred to the lens, the aocictv hud sustained through the death of Mr W. G. Thomas, news having been received that he her! been killed in action in France. The deceased was a son of Dr W. Thomas, ot this citv. At the request of the president, Piper J. Erskiue ployed ;t lament, those present standing. . The programme was in the hands of Mr Harold Rowe. Songs were contributed bv Mrs Cray, Mr Gillmore, Mr H. Hobbs and Mr Morrison: recitations by Mr Bartlett ar.d Miss Sherwood; a humorous lecture by Mr Bartlett; end a pianoforte solo by Mr H. Rowe.
