SPORTING.
NEWS AND NOTES. With a number of Riecarton horses claiming engagements at tho Amborley meeting on Monday, tho track work was of more than usual interest yesterday. Battlo Evo and San Sebastian were stretched out over a milo, and wore responsible for a smart performance, Comely was too good for Masterstroko over six furlongs, moving freely all the way. Ogier beat Don Francisco over a similar distance. The imported fillies, Love Token and Winter Cherry sprinted a few furlongs in good style.
Everything points to the Amberley Racing Club’s meeting on Monday being a big success. Tho acceptances are excellent for all tho events on tho programme, and there is material for some first-class sport. Tho Amberley Cup should provide a good contest, as all the competitors are in racing trim, most or them havincr recent form to recommend them. The Mount Grey Stakes, decided over seven furlongs at weight-for-ago, promises to be a particularly interesting event. It is understood that Bimeter and Emperador will represent Mr G. D. Greenwood, while Mr G. L. Steed Wl *l start tho three-year-old, The Toll, who is reported to bo in first class condition. The imported horse, Redfern, who cost Sir William Cooper 5300 guineas in England, docs not look like making much return for the outlay. Ho lias only started once since ho has been in Australia, and be has now been turned out for another spell. Tho Duke of Portland has had the stables at tho Welbeck Abbey stud adapted as a hostel for the women who are now being trained in agriculture by the Notts Education Committee.
Tho English horso Konnymore, by John o’ Gaunt —Croceum, died recently at John Thursby’s stud. He won tho Two Thousand Guineas m 1914, but in the Derby, for which ho started favourite, he got away badly, but failed to gain a place. He also started lavourite for the St Leger, but was easily beaten by Black Jester.
The result of tho Wanganui Guineas was rather unexpected. Tho first aud second favourites failed to run into a place, whilo the winner, who was tliml choice, was followed homo by the two outsiders of tho field. Tho form shown in tho race may not be confirmed later in the season, as some of tho competitors are likely to bo improved a good deal by a few races.
Eight New Zealand Cup candidates were" racing at Wanganui yesterday, but none of them figured among the winners. Beltane made the best shea - ill"’, when ho finished second in tho Spring Handicap, his performance being something of a surprise, in view of his effort in tho Avondale Giu.iea-,. when he had to bo ridden out to beat a moderate field for second place. Sedd-el-Bahr and Square Deal were tho favourites and their poor form was therefore a set back, but Welcome Nugget was the outsider of the field, su thalTit is possible ho is not ready yet. Sweet Tipperary was second in the Wanganui Guineas, but sho scarcely appeals as a two rnilcr, while Rose Pink, unplaced in the Putiki Hack Handicap, has very poor form to iocommond her. Toki and Revalenta failed in the Duric Hack Handicap. Altogether, there was nothing specially attractive about tho form shown by any of tho Cup candidates. \ Bjorneborg appears to liavo registered a smart performance in winning tho Wanganui Guineas, lie smothered the opposition with a late run. Last season Bjorneborg won twice and was placed seven times out ' of a thvon starts. His wins wore scored in the Nursery Handicap, at the Auckland Racing Club’s Summer meeting, and tho Great Northern Champagne Stakes, on tho same course in the autumn. His form entitled him to rank very close to the loading two-year-olds, hut ho opened this season badly, as lie failed to show up in a race, at Avondale. Bjorneborg was bred by his owner, Mr T. H. Lowry, being by Finland from War Scare, by MartianGossip, tho clam of Bobrikoff. Sweet Tipperary, who filled second place, had an easy win in tiro "Welcome Stakes at. Riecarton last spring but her only other good performance was her second to Egypt in a handicap at Trentham in January. Sho is a speedy filly and sho should win her sharo of races this season. Elation, who finished third, is owned by Mr W. E. Bidwill, being by Elevation—lntelligence, by Birkenhead from Industry, an Australian bred mare by imported Nautilus. For some time past Elation has been shaping well on the Trentham tracks, and ho gives promise of developing into a useful horse. Of the beaten lot Hyttus was a high-class galloper last season, but bo did not always run up to expectations. Good Hope and Coase Fire wero both good performers as two-year-olds, but they will probably bo better when they have had n bit of racing to sharpen them up. Splondant is a smart galloper, and though he had nothing to recommend him up to classic form, ho should soon open his winning account over a short course. There will he some other aspirants for tho highest honours later oil, but in tlio Meantime the three-year-olds, judged on tho Wanganui Guineas, do not appear to he a high-class lot. A Press Assriciation message from Sydney last night stated that the racing siro Carbinier was dead.
