LA BASSEE.
A TOUGH PROPOSITION. LONDON, January 3.
A Paris message says that tho taking of La Bassee, where two German army corps are quartered, surrounded by exceptionally strong earthworks, is regarded as essential to any concrete forward move in order to protect the communications of the allied forces, who look upon it as one of the hardest problems they have to solve. GERMAN REPORT. AMSTERDAM, January 2. A German official report states that the French attacked north-west of St Menehould (Argonne front), suffering heavy losses.
