TWO BOOKMAKERS IN COURT.

EACH ACCUSED FINED £2O

At the Magistrate's Court on Saturday, before Mr H. W. Bishop, S.M., William Hancock was charged that on Deoamber 29 bo, l>eing «v bookmaker, did bet on licensed promises, to wit, tbc llotherfiold Hotel. Mr W. Hoban appeared for accuser], who pleaded guilty.

Mr Hoban said that the accused had been in Cbristchurch for thirty-six years, and some timo ago was employed by the Chriatehurcli City Council as a night watchman. He pleaded' for a. small ftno.

Mr Bishop, to Chief-Detective Bishop: 1 tvniit to know something about the licensed promises. You know the action the Licensing Cominittee took up about this business, and it was backed up by the Canterbury Licensed Victuallers' Association.

Chief-Detective Bishop: This man has been carrying on this business for some months, but we have been defeated by the servants in the licensed premises. The licensee must have known what was going on. If the licensees of hotels are going to act like that . Mr Bishop: Yes, T know. lam sure of the attitude which the Licensing Committee will take when this matter will come before it.

Accused was fined £2O and costs. In the second betting ca*e, Stewart Russell was charged with having betted on licensed premises, to wit, Tattersall's Hotel. Mr Hoban also appeared for the accused. Chief-Detective Bishop said that the accused had been carrying on the business just the same as the other man. There was evidence that the persons in the hotel aided in the transactions. Another fine of £2O and costs was imposed, and Mr Bishop added', "We'll get some of the profits."

TWO FURTHER. ARRESTS.

On Saturday Chief-Detective Bishop and Detectives Ward and Gibson arrested Edgar Neate on a charge that on December 29, 1914, at Cbristchurch, being a bookmaker, be did het in V a public place, to . wit, Cathedral Square. George Deighton, charged with the same offence on the same day, was nlso arrested.

The accused were .brought before Mr W. Barrett, J.P., and released on bail, to appear before the Court today. Ner.te was bailed out in one siirety of £IOO and himself in £IOO. and Deighton in one surety of £SO and himself in £SO. ,
