THE PLUNKET SHIELD
CANTERBURY v. AUCKLAND. [Per Press Association.]
AUCKLAND, January 8
The match for the Plunkot Shield between Canterbury and Auckland representative teams was continued on Saturday in perfect weather and before an attendance, of 1500. Canterbury's first innings closed at 208, four runs behind Auckland's total. Tho Auckland team commenced tho second innings brightly, but the excellence of the bowling of A. W. Thomas, a surprise packet who was not tried on Friday, quickly steadied play. With the exception of E. Horspool none of the first seven batsmen did well, although N. C. Sneddon and F. R. Mason gained double-figure scores. Thomas and Bennett bowled unchanged in tho early stages, in which there was more hitting than scoring, both bowlers sending down many maiden overs. Horspool's patient innings of 50 did much to take the sting out of the bowling. When the seventh wicket fell, all taken bv Thomas, at a cost of 51 runs, tho total was 119. W. Brooke-Smith and G. Cummings then became associated, and they raised the score to 2-19 for the eighth wicket. The partnership added 130, to which Brooke-Smith contributed 65. Cummings scored most of the 19 runs in the ninth wicket partnership, and his score was 61. Ho carried his total to 73 before he was caught in the outfield, and the Auckland innings closed for 28(3. Canterbury thus required 291 to win. Thomas's great performance earned an ovation for him. He was kept on practically the whole innings, and even when ho tired was more difficult to play than was any of the other six bowlers tried. His average was reduced in the closing stages of the innings, but even then his figures, eight wickets for 99 runs, will stand as tho best in Plunket Shield matches for many a day. Ho bowled forty-eight overs, twenty of which were miidens. Bennett also kept the runs down, and of twenty-six overs bowled by him twelve wero maidens. Canterbury made 25 runs for no wickets before stumps were drawn. The following are the scores:— AUCKLAND. First Innings . . .212 Second Innings. L. G. Hernus, c Carlton b Thomas 1 E.
