PIGEON FLYING.
EAST CAPE RACE.
The Christchurch Homing Pigeon Society flew off its first East Cape race on December 20, fifty-four birds, representing seventeen owners, competing. The birds wero lib; orated by tho ohief officer of the Monowai at, a point three miles north of East Cape at 5.30 a.in. in a fresh westerly breeze and lino weather, which changed to a. strong souwest wind, making it impopsiblo for tno birds to homo, on the day of liberation. The raco was open for three days. Although tno birds hud to face a strong sou’-west wind .and rain on tho socond day, two managed to get through, and throe more came in on the third day; making tv total of five home m race-time.' Tho winner of tho first prize and tho club’s silver cup was F. Hingsford’a Dax. which flow tho distance or />23 miles 1150yds air lino in 28hr Smin 6see, after deducting eight hours for darkness a velocity of 517 yards per minute. A. 1‘ ml ay eon s Will of the Wisp was second, in 26hr 39mm 56sec, a velocity of 636yds per minutes; G. Barter’s Little Tib third, in S6hr 6taun 20sec, a velocity of 414yds, and I. Aowton’s Capstan fourth, in 42hr 56nnn G3sec, a volo/fity of 357yds. F. King6ford s Combine also homed in race-time.
