RICCARTON DOMAIN.

OPENED ON SATURDAY. Under the best- of weather ’, con-1 ditto as, the Riccarton Domain was opened on Saturday after-., noon by Mr T. Teschemaker, tka . principal donor in the list of subscriptions towards the purchase of the ground. There was a good attendance, , and Derry’s Band played musical item* throughout the afternoon. :, The chairman of the Riccarton Domain Board briefly introduced Mr. Teschemaker. _ j Mr Teschemaker said that he was pleased to state that the Domain was commencing entirely free of debt-j Thanks to the Government, this' had; . been made possible. The ground was; an area of acres, and its total cost' was £IO2O. He wanted to see the; youths of the country develop morej sinew and muscle, and the Domain going to offer opportunities in thi# Si-j rection. He felt that the Domain was j a credit to the people who took the’ matter up and had put such a lot of:, i enterprise into it. . Mr G. Witty said that the Domain was going to be a factor in bringingf people to the district, and if the present ground had not been provided, iff would have been built upon, and in a few. years time a ground would havd had to be acquired further out in thecountry. The residents of the _ dis-j trict owed a great debt of gratitude,to the band of people who worked so hard for the success of the Domain, j. A programme of athletic sports waa< then gone through. The. general manJ ager of the sports events was Mr AJ Biggs, Mr J. U. Mullins was per, Mr G. Forsyth starter, and Mr G. Witty, M.P., judge. Mr P. Anderson was general secretary. ! Other items of interest were Highlad dancing, and a military display by a squad of Territorials. .Afternoon tea • was provided by the ladies of the district. - - !
