THE FERRY SERVICE.
ROUGH TRIP BY THE WAHINE. PASSENGERS AND MAILS MISS EXPRESS. It was 8.36 a.m. when the ferry steam or Wahino arrived in Lyttelton i on Saturday, and as a consequence she failed to conect with the first express to Invercargill. In conversation with a representative of the “Lyttelton Times,” Captain B. M. Aldwell, of the Wahine, said the deparutre from Wellington was made at 8 p.m. As soon as the vessel had cleared Wellington Heads she ran into a southerly gale with mountainous seas. Tho Wahine forged ahead in good style, but it was 10.50 p.m. before she was abreast of Cape Campbell. From this out the seas and wind were bad, and it was not until within sight of Godley Head that the weather showed any signs of abating. Under the circumstances the Wahine put up a good performance. The small steamer John reached Lyttelton on Saturday morning after a passage of thirty-eight hours from Wellington.
