THE TBENTHAM MEETING. SATURDAY’S MATCHES. [Per Pbess Association.l TRENTHAM, February 28. JUDGING DISTANCE. The Judging-distance Competition (usual or range firing) was held at the conclusion of yesterday's shooting. The number of distances was eight, and each competitor was allowed one minute for each distance. The prises were allotted to the men whose cards approximated the best aggregates over the several distances. The winner returned a card showing excellent judgment. He obtained full marks for six distances, was one point below tho maximum in one case, and failed in another. A number of the guesses were extraordinarily wide of the mark. Chmiside and S. May hew (Feilding) 35. WESTLAND MATCH. * Proceedings commenced this morning in almost perfect weather but alter midday the light was not -so good and tho wind increased somewhat. The morning was devoted to the Westland Match, seven shots at 300, 500 and 600 yards, and the snooting was advanced' under very favourable conditions. At the Collins range possibles were scored by Fisher (Suburbs), G. Loveday (Woodville), Reynolds - (Christchurch) and Pickering (Linton). Potter, Marsh, White, Batt, Montgomery and Feast were each only cue point under the possibles, and a large number achieved. 33. At SCO yards there were three “ all huts,” Banks, Richardson and Orintosh (Opaki), and 33’s were numerous. At the 600 yards many changes took place and men who had performed, well at the previous range fell back in position. A. Ilvde (Okawa) topped the scores with a useful 99 (32—33—34), thus narrowly missing the possible at the longest range. M’lver (Te Awamutu) was next with 97, and then followed Fisher and Belk (Post and Telegraph), King (Wanganui), Knowles, ' Rider ant} Cheoseman, with 96 each. Several other competitors were in the 35 division. A fine record was put up by Squad 5 in A Section, who were shooting at No. 13 target. At the 300 yaids. range , they put on tlirce possibles and one “all‘hut,” the total of tho range being 236, or just nine points behind the possiblo. At the next range another possible was registered by Belk. while at the 600 yards distance Oliver found the bull’s-eye every shot and Belk again distinguished himsolf with an ".all but,” while the’-rest of the squad maintained nn' average well up to anything else ■on tlie range. The prize list was compiled in anticipation of a large entry. It was alleged that, in consequence of fhe strike, the original estimate of entries had been reduced. Ii was decided to reduce prize money on all competitions fired after one o’clock on Saturday. The reduction will amount to a little, over £3OO.
