VICTORIA RACING CLUB. AUTUMN MEETING. By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright. MELBOURNE, February 23. The autumn meeting of the Victoria Racing Club was opened to-day in fine weather. The most open Newmarket Handicap tor many years and the promise of close races for the Sires’ Produce Stakes and St Leger drew a great crowd to Flemington. The racing proved disappointing, tho tight finishes which were expected in the classic races being absent. Radnor galloped over Andelosia in tho St Leger, and as Traqucit? failed to gain a, place in , the Sires’ Produce Stakes, backers bad a. very bad time. The only good race during the day was the Essendon Stakes. Tho hurdle race .was notable for nothing except tho downfall of AViddcn. who has been very successful lately. Though there were six starters, tho St. Leger was expected to resolve itself into a match between Radnor and Andelosia. The stable connections of Andelosia have always claimed him os o. stayer and they fancied him for the Australian Cup, but nis running upset that theory. Ho failed to gei within striking distance of Radnor, who started to pull up a hundred yards from home. Radnor, who established a record for tho day, has proved a profitable investment for Mr Mackay. In the- Newmartst Handicap the large field crowded the course, making it impossible for at 1 the competitors to act properly, while it was equally impossible to get an adequate description of the race, the runners extending right across the course. lownit, the last horse to goto the post and tho first home, was a rank outsider, out his time has tnly been once beaten ni the history of the race. In the Sires Produce Stakes the question of juvenile supremacy was definitely settled between the champions of New South Wales and Victoria, who had not previously met. V oorak had the A ictnrian filly, Traquette, badly beaten two furlongs from homo, and he won pulling up m half a second outside record time for therace. Traquette has evidently gone off baalj since the. spring. The Wallace gelding v\allalo was not suspected or being up to v;eisrlit-for-age form, after his failure in the Woodcliff Handicap at Caulfield a week ago. but lie showed, tliat he was very fit and he is now established as a warm fayourue tot the Australian Cup. After shaking o Cider a quarter of a mile from home,; boa Prince, the favourite, appeared to have tne Essendon Stakes in hand, but AAnllalo cut him down in a few strides and won with plenty in hand, after tho only exciting finis during the day. , , ~ The following arc the details of the racing: PINES HURDLE HANDICAP, of 2 soys each, with 300 sovs added; second horse 60 sovs and third horse 30 3ors from the stake. Etmpera-dor. who won the Jackson Stakes at Wanganui on Saturday, has been racing for some time ever long courses, and during the last few weeks he has shown up prominently in several events extending to a milo and a quarter and over. It is evident, however, that his pace has not been impaired, as theTe were some useful sprinters in Saturday’s field, though it did not come up to the quality which the race has attracted in some previous years. Wullaio, the winner of the Essendon Stakes, at the Victoria Racing Club’s meeting on Saturday, is trained by the ex-New Zealander, M. T. M’Grath. He was probably ridden by H. Gray, who had the engagement to pilot Wallalo in tho Australian Cup beforo ho left New Zealand a week ago. Radnor, who won the Victoria St Leger on Saturday, was formerly owned bv the Sydney trainer, I. Earnshaw, but after finishing second to Beragoon in the Derby at Randwick and occupying a similar position in the Victoria Derby, ho was sold to tho West Australian owner, Mr S. P. Mackay. He immediately got back a good share of his purchase money by winning the C. B. Fisher Plate, in which he had Andelosia and Beragoon behind him. On being taken to Perth, he won the West Australian Derby and tho Grandstand Plate, Saturday’s race being his first since his return to the eastern part of the Commonwealth. Mr G. D. Greenwood had a very successful day tot the Wanganui Jockey Club’s meet- ! ng - 1 ?, 11 Saturday. In'the Jackson Stakes he filled first and second places, with Emperadcr and Rencontre, while Historictte ana Canute credited him with the two hack handicaps. G. Scob-.e s team at Riccarton will be strengthened to-day by the arrival of two more horses from Mr Harvey Patterson's Meadowbank stud. One is a three-year-old gelding by Menschikoff—Segovia and the mher a two-year-old gelding by DclaivarePolly Prim. The Coronet gelding Conn the Shaughraun. woo recently joined R. Longley’s stable at Riccarton. was sent out ior a schooling task oyer hurdles on Saturday morning. His display however, was very unsatisfactory. He baulked several. times, and, despite ail the efforts of his rider (L. Hngerty) he showed a decided disinclination to face the obstacles. Athenic and Milo have arrived at Riccartem from Mr D. Rutherford’s station. Athenic, who is suffering from wind‘troubles, will probably., be operated on before being put in work. He ,'s a four-year-old by Charlemagne ll.—Seashell. *he dam of Sea King, and "he is a particularly big horse, standing wed on to seventeen hands. Milo, the second arrival, is .oi aged gelding by Conqueror from Ekaterini Passeropoulo. He was a fair hurdler when formerly in commission, and he will now be got ready for jumping engagements in the winter.
W. Clarke has taken Chorale in hand again at Riccarton. He is a throe-year-old colt by Stronghold—Cavatina, an Australianbred 'mare: by Lochicl—Melema, by Splendour—Minuet, sister to The Cornet's dam. Orchestra, by Gouldsbrough—Melody. When in training last season Chorale was rather wayward. His only public appearance, was in the Autumn Nursery Handicap at Riccarton last Easter, and he created some excitement ' by overpowering his small rider and trying to run off the course. The four-year-old pacer Huon Drift has been in a bad way during the past week. He became suddenly ill, his temperature rising dangerously high, and his owner, Mr R. J. Munro, called in veterinary assistance. Under the care of Mr J. R. Charlton the
horse has made wonderful progress, his fine constitution helping) him a lot, and though still in need of oareful attention he haa paused the crisis of his trouble. The horses which were purchased by Sir Francis Price at the sale of the late Sir William Russell’s stud were shipped to England last week. Tho Melbourne Trotting Derby, which is divided into pacing and trotting divisions, will be decided on Thursday, and interest in tho event, so far as New Zealand is concerned, is enhanced by the fact that the competitors in the trotting division will include one performer bred in the dominion. This is Olive L., by Wallace L.—Cissie Wood, by .Wildwood, from the Kentucky mare Auntie. Olive L., who is a half-sister to Mr W. Morland’s Lord Chancellor, was bred by M. Edwards, and at his clearing sple, before he left New Zealand for Australia, she was purchased by Mr 11. Nathan for 146 guineas, being a yearling at that time. She started once ns a two-year-old, finishing out of a place, but she subsequently came on a lot, giving promise of developing into something more than a useful trotter. Some time ago her owner placed her under the care of M. Edwards, who is now training her in Melbourne. She was started in n trotting event at Terang last week, and though, the opposition ■ would probably be moderate, her success leads to the belief that she 'may 'prove hard to heat in tho Trotting Deroy ni Melbourne on Thursday .
