MISSIONARY ARRESTED.
ACTION OF PORTUGUESE AUTHORITIES. . SYMPATHY WITH NATIVES RESENTED. By Telegraph—Pres* Association—Copyright. LISBON, February 26. The Portuguese authorities have arrested the Rev J. S. Bowskill, English Baptist missionary at San Salvador, in the Congo, in connection with his attitude towards the recruitment of native labour for the cocoa islands, San Thome and Principe. ARREST AN ACT OF REVENGE. BRITAIN REQUESTS IMMEDIATE RELEASE. (Received February 28, 12.10 a.m) LONDON, February 27. The Foreign Office is communicating with Portugal, requesting to be informed of tho grounds of Mr Bowskill’s arrest, also requesting his immediate release, pending inquiry. The Baptist Missionary Society officials regard the arrest as an act of revenge by minor Portuguese officers owing to Mr Bowskill’s efforts on behalf of tho natives.
