THE DEFENCE FORCES.
SENIOR CADETS. GENERAL GODLEY'S INSPECTION. Speaking to a reporter before he left for Wellington last evonmg, General Godley said that during the past few days he had inspected about 400 Senior Cadets and was delighted with their smart appearance and good work. He saw the Kaiapoi company, on tho range, carrying out its musketry course and was very pleased to notice that'it was doing its work very well indeed. Xhe Rangiora Cadets were also very smart and well trained. At Ashburton there had been a large parade of three companies, at Fairiio a comparatively good muster-and at Geraldine ah excellent parade of two companies. On the whole the work done was satisfactory and that branch of the forces was getting along very well. All the lads were armed with .303 < Lee-Enfield rifles 4 , which the Minister of Defence had purchased in Canada, These wero being issued to tho Canterbury companies at the present time and were much appreciated by the Cadets. It made them keener in their, work, and also made it much easier to carry out musketry instruction. Formerly there were only ten rifles to each company. The General added that he had inspected the ground at Mount Torlefse, over which the men would manosuvre at the time of Sir lan Hamilton's visit. It was a very suitable place. The camp would bo pitched on a flat piece of 'ground, quite near to Major Percy Johnson's property, midway between Springfield and . Kowai and the manoeuvring ground would be the low foothills, an ideal situation for all arms of the service.
