Inspector Gough; in his evidence at the Police Court, stated that Starchfield was released the day after the murder in consequence of police inquiries into his movements at the time of the murder. He added that several persons who identified the boy at the mortuary stated that they 6aw the boy with a woman.

The defence indicated its ability to show tlidt a woman committed the murder.
