ECLIPSE OF THE SUN.
TO TAKE PLACE TO-DAY. The annual eclipse of the sun will take place to-day, and it will be visible from Christchurch, though on'y as a partial eclipse, the greatest phase obscuring only .022 of tne sun’s diameter. Ships rounding Cape Horn will have the best opportunities for seeing the whole shadow of the moon projected on the sun, the centre line of the eclipse passing across the South Pacific Ocean, and the best position will be about 700 miles off the South American coast. Boats in mid-ocean, however, may see the eclipse when the sun is setting. In Christchurch the view of the eclipse will commence at 10 hours 42 minutes 52 seconds a.m. and will end at 11 hours 25 minutes 13 seconds a.m. The greatest phase will take place at 11 hours 4 minutes 3 seconds.
Seen from Christchurch it will appear as if the moon will graze the sun a little to the highest point of its disc, so that there will be seen, a distinct flattening of the circular outline. With smoked or coloured glass this should be seen easily at about eleven o’clock;
