ROSE CARNIVAL.
. , _A -. MEETING OF COMMITTEE. AMALGAMATED FLOWER SHOW PROPOSALS. A meeting of the Domains Carnival Committee was held at the City Couusil’s library last evening; present— Messrs H. J. Beswick (chairman), J. Jamieson, J. Young, J. M’Cullough, W. T. Robinson, E. Smith, S. A. Staples, H. Holland, J. R. Evans and C. D. Morris and Captain M’Ge'e. ' The chairman said that the object of the meeting was to discuss a proposal which had been placed before him .by. Messrs Wragge and Cant, on .behalf of the Canterbury Horticultural Society. l . The Society proposed that their summer show should be incorporated with the Rose Carnival, and stipulated that its members should be admitted free to the carnival, and 'should be permitted to exhibit at the show without entrance fee. There ■ would be an additional expense for tents. The Society proposed to contribute nothing. ’ The matter was discussed in committee. A letter was received from the Sweet Pea and Carnation Society making a similar proposal in respect to incorporating its summer show with the Rose Carnival. The Schedule Committee reported on this proposal, refcommending that it should not be accepted. The committee further recommended that the next Rose Carnival should .be held on November 28. ■'Mr A. Cant waited on the committee in reference to the Horticultural Society’s proposal. He said that the Society did not propose to incur any expense in connection with the show. It would not be prepared to find the prizes, or to pay for tent accommodation. • At the Society’s ordinary shows the prize money came out of the door takings. . The chairman said that at last carnival £IOO was spent on prizes. It would he a serious matter if they had to increase this amount. Mr Cant said that his Society spent only £3O or £4O in prizes at a show. If the committee added, say £lO worth of: classes to its last year’s rose schedule, that would. meet the Society’s views. It should he to the benefit of the carnival that the Society’s members would be working for its success. Mr Staples said that the carnival would lose the gate money of the Society’s members, and also the additional prize money and cost of additional accommodation. It did not appear to him a good bargain from the point of view of a committee that was out to. make money. Mr Cant said his Society would be pleased to consider a counter proposal from the committee. He then withdrew. Mr Staples suggested that the Horticultural Society members should be required to pay their admission money and entrance fees, the committee finding the prizes. Mr Young said that basis would be more satisfactory. They could allow the Horticultural Society to nominate three members to the Schedule Cornmittee. It was decided that the Society’s pjrppcsal could not bo accented. The chairman, and- Messrs Staples and Young were appointed a siib-commit-te© to ascertain if better terms could he offered by the .Horticultural Society. The sub-committee was also asked to communicate with the Sweet PVa and Can-nation Society on the same subject.
