NORTH CANTERBURY SALEYARDS.
TO THE EDITOR. gin,, Your correspondent “Shareholder and Ratepayer ” has hit the right nail on the head when he writes, “It is only the discontented few who either want to sell their sections or to reap some commission from the Company who wish to pufh the matter further.’’ It is ever thus. A few earnest men put their shoulders to the wheel for a common good, and when they have accomplished the object in view some over-zealous workers are sura to spoil the achievement by pushing their energies to a point beyond discretion. The protnotera started with the object of obtaining public yards for North Canterbury ; they have succeeded by securing Mr Busa' yards, and are now content with their success l . But a rabid few, who have some axes to grind, are bent upon wasting money in the erection of new yards, which, 1 venture to predict, will disgust so many that they will never receive the patronage necessary to render the investment a profitable one. What if M r Buss and the Loan Company withdraw the privilege now accorded to other auctioneers in the event of opposition yards being op-ned ? And. further, suppose they waive all yard fees, what amount of stock would find ita wey-to-tha new yards.
and in such case who is to provide funds for salaries, wages, rates, <fco.P Methinko that, instead of dividends, there would inevitably calls. And yon know if shareholders decline to pay calls there is a Court close handy with obliging officials, which could collect them without much trouble on the part -of the Company fl officers. No, “discretion is the better part; of valour we have got what we aimed at—let us make equitable terms with Mr Buss, and drop the question for a time at least, until wo see how the new arrangement will work.—l am, &e., ANOTHER SHAREHOLDER.
