LYTTELTON BOROUGH COUNCIL.
The usual fortnightly meeting of this Council was held on Monday; present— His Worship the Mayor (Mr J. T. Brice) in the chair, aud Councillors Stinson, Thompson, Schumacher, Webb, Chambers, Laurenaon, and Pairman. CASUAL WARD. Correspondence was read : From the Secretary of the Christchurch Hospital Board, stating that the communication from the Council aa to the casual ward would receive the attention of the Board in dne coarse. The letter was received. REPORTS. The Mayor reported that during the week he had received a telegram from the Hon W. P. Reeves, with reference to the Queensland relief fund, and a meeting had been called for Wednesday evening to consider what action should ha taken. A report had been circulated to the effect that several men from the ship Hinemoa had been removed to the Christchurch hospital suffering with typhoid fever, and he (the Alayox) had placed himself iu communication with tho Chairman of the Sanitary Committee on the subject. Tha report suggested that steps should be taken to appoint a medical health officer, who would have great power in such cases. The matter of appointing a medical officer was referred to a Committee consisting of Councillors Laurenson, Thompson, Schumacher and the Mayor, to report at next meeting. Councillor Schumacher moved and Councillor Stinson seconded—” That the Mayorand Councillor Pairman consult with the health officer, and it" necessary telegraph to the Colonial Secretary on the subject.” This was carried. Tho Mayor’s action in calling a meeting iu respect to the Queensland fund was approved. Tha Foreman of Works reported having taken levels and measurements on the recreation ground, and found that to put a coating of soil over five chains in length and three in width would cost about £35, and to put down a cinder track would cost about £ls, or £SO iu all. On the motion of Councillor Stinson, seconded by Councillor Schumacher, the report was adopted. The Foreman reported that the work of connecting the water service with tho houses in tho upper part of the town was being proceeded with, and everything waa working satisfactorily. The report was adopted. FINANCE.
The Finance Committee reported receipts since last meeting aa follow :—Rates £33 2s 3d, water £136 16s 9d, rents £Bl 17a lid, sundries £3O 12a 9J, making a total of £282 9s Bd. The report recommended payments amounting to £422 18s Bd, the chief item of which was £395 lls in connection with the extension of the water service, the total cost of which Councillor Webb reported to be £1079. Councillor Pairman brought up the matter of taking over the control of the Public Cemetery. It was decided to allow the matter to stand over till next meeting. notice of motion. Councillor Webb gave notice to move at next meeting—“ That the Council take into consideration the necessity for immediate steps to connect the main reservoir with the town by replacing the present five-inch main with an eight-inch one, and that the necessary action be taken to raise a loan for that purpose and to obtain the approval of the ratepayers to such a proposal.”
