(Special to Pebbb Association.] THE WATERLOO CUP. LONDON, Feb. 22. Betting bn the Waterloo Cup ia 4 to 1 Kgainet Colonel North’s dog Fullerton. ' MELBOURNE TRAINING NOTES. MELBOUBNE, Feb. 22. Prime Minister is very lame after galloping yesterday, and fears are entertained that he has irrecoverably broken down. During the afternoon St Hippo skimmed over sis furlongs without apparent effort in Imin 18«eo. He was restricted to walking exercise this morning, and was as playful as a kitten, effectually silencing the croakers about his supposed lameness. Vono and Chatham did five furlongs comfortably in Imin 6seo.' ThS latter is in great fettle. AbUbub. did a slinking half-mile on the tin: ; : 1b ' 64 seconds. Sprig-o’-Myrtle looked blooming after an excellent gallop yesterday, but Bitinsi appeared tucked up. MELBOURNE BETTING. Batting over the Autumn Meeting of the Victorian Boeing Club is restricted principally to doubles. Sprig o’Myrtle, Warpaint and Buooleuoh being the favourite selections for the Newmarket Handicap, coupled with St Hippo for the Australian Cup. Prime Minister has been sempletely knocked back in tbe betting lor the Newmarket Handicap, and offers el 100 to 3 met with no response. Eavenswiag has received consistent support for the. Newmarket Handicap at 100 to 5, while Beverley promises to see a much shorter price. DUNEDIN JOCKEY CLUB’S AUTUMN MEETING. PIBST DAT. PyiOK OTTB SPECIAL CORRESPONDENT.! 1 DUNEDIN, Feb. 22, Kandicapper, Mr G. Dowse j starter, Mr 8. Powell; ■Deifaig the earlier portion of thb afterSee* the weather was lovely for the first Wi racing of the Dunedin Jockey Club s Anthmn Meeting, but later on the sky heoveroast and ram threatened. The attendance was large, and tbe racing was meet interesting. Speculation was not quite «o brisk as on the corresponding day of the Antumn Meeting last year, but thoee who were fortunate enough to ■elect the winners had no cause to complma of the dividends. Hardly over has one single day’s racing produced so many •uprises. ' The arrangements were, if Cible, better than ever, and it is needto shy that Mr : Dowse was on the best of terms with himself. Certainly the genial handicappec has every cause for aelf-com-pliinsM, and Mr Powell’s efforts with the flag were remarkably successful. As alseady stated, speculation was not partiftnhrlj brisk,' and the .69839 Messrs Kasoa and Roberta passed through the tetalisators is £1599 less than the amount invested on the corresponding day of the Antumn Meeting last year. Proceedings commenced with the First Handicap Hurdle v+h*, for which Magpie was made a strong favourite. Mr Russell’s horse appeared well enough, but after Rebel bad taken his measure at the top of the straight, Clarence came with a partioularly strong run, and won very easily from tha Otago representative, while Justice just defeated the favourite for third place. A nice-looking field of five went to the post for the Dunedin Champagne Stakes, for which Response and Lakeshell received most support. Mr O’Brien's filly has coma on since she performed so well in. the Middle Park Plate, and there was no question of the improvement in Lakeshell. Outpost, however, although grown a good deal since the sj ring, hardly appeared at his beat, and besides that was rather slow in getting on his legs. Spinaway is a nicelooking daughter of Nordenfeldt and Bpinaker, but she failed to stay the full distance, and Persuasion, who appeared rather lighter _ than when, she ran at Riccarton earlier in the month, performed badly. _ Gitano, a fine, slashing full brother to Gipsy King, is still not nearly ready, and he will probably next season defeat some of those who finished in front of him to-day. Lakeshell made the, running right up to the distance, where Response joined him, and Mr Cntts* colt tiring in the last hundred yards, the Australian won rather comfortably. When the field went out for the Cap, hackers preferred to forget Prime Warden’s past failures on the Forbury, and once again entrusted the aon of Apremont with their complete confidence. Clanrauald n>i{ gext in demand, but Mr Lunn’s horse, whose muscles were hardly strongly enough defined to pleaee many of hia admirers, did apt- give the impartial critic the idea of being a horse capable of staying two miles and a-distance. Thame, though still on the light side, has improved immensely since she performed at Riccarton in the spring. Scot Free is evidently not the class of animal for a race of this description, and Captive ie not by many pounds as good a horse as his brother Freedom. Awatua Rose appears to have come on'' a good deal since he finished third in. the Midsummer Handicap, and Wyvertt had just made that improvement, since he finished second in the same race, which was expected of him. Tempest was passed over with the remark that she had never looked so well, but was out of her distance.' However, Mr Stephenson’s mare conclusively proved that sbe can stay, and that well, To describe the race in a few words. Tempest jumped away in trout, and remained there to the finish. At different stages Captive and Awarua Rosa ran up tbrher, hub the daughter of Tornado shook them off in turn and won a victory which, outside the stake itself, has not been of much benefit to her owner. Thame s nder lost a' stirrup leather at a critical moment, and but for this Mr Ormond’s mare must have finished even closer to the winner , than sue, did. Prime Warden, after occupying a by no means excellent position tbfougbout tho race, finished sn indifferent timd just in front of Clanranaid, who persevered in the gamoat manner pos-e-ir.ia ,o»g alter he was in hopeless ifiiculuoe. Wyvern ran really well, b , ,1 Awarua Rose was prominent for a m.le and a half, out Captive dropped right o.n of the atru/gle at the end of a mile and a quarter. The Selling Bate produced. a capital struggle between Derby and Stf'uch’jnge, and after tbe latter bad by a head he waa bought in at .£32. Hvpomeues, Ccuchfield, Morpheus and P.auo were withdrawn from the Publican’s H mdicftp- In their absence Huguenot ws,s niftda favourite, but the daughter of Martyr got badly away, and was never able to make the slightest impression on Heather Beil, who jumped off in front, and keeping her position right through, won very easily by a rhiiole of lengths from Conjurer, who O'ltstayed Kulhioe in the struggle for second place. After Mr fc>. Alexander s nair Frivolity and Rosehill. appeared to be going to fight out tha finish for the Maiden Plate, toe Lumper caught them at rha distance, and won with perhaps a tnfle to si-are. Viscount won the Selling TwoPlate Race rather easily from v’ .. Rjvhl, hue had to submit to a protect ou the ground that T. Buddioombe, who rode the eon of Sir Garnet could not draw the weight without placing his whip in the scale. After hearing * large amount of evidence, the Sbewavde decided to postpone the enquiry until tbe evening.
