LYTTELTON REGATTA.
The two events which had to be postponed on Monday were pulled off last night. There was a strong nor’-west wind blowing off tho land, but (he water, though rather lumpy, was not rough enough to materially interfere with (he rowing. Tho crews all appeared anxious for tho fray, particularly the Dunedin men, but their enthusiasm was not rewarded by success, as they had to bo contented with an inferior place in each event. The first event to bo decided was the Fouboabrd Outrigger Race, open to all corners j entrance, £2 2s. First prize, £26; second £lO. Cam ((Jure B.O.). G. Wright, stroke; J. Perrin, 3; U. Day, 2; A. Winterbourne, bow 1 Ilysius (O.B.O.). J. F. Grierson, stroke ; L. M. Ollivier, 8; V. D. Dobson, 2 j E. M. Boulton, bow 2 Hoathcoto (L.R.0.). 0. Fitz Simmons, stroke; T. Harkisi,B; G. Graham, 2; W. Fitz Simmons, bow; J. Donovan, cox ... 8 Dunedin (U. 8.0., Dunedin). A. Burnie, stroke ; J. Mercer, 8; G. Lindsay, 2; J. Lindsay, bow; W. Quinn, cox 0 All four crews came punctually to the post, and the starter’s flag fell at 6.18 p.m. The Kaiapoi crow, who wore the favourites, got the lead and held it right through to the finish, the Ilyssus being five seconds later, and the Lyttelton crew close behind their Ohristoburoh rivals. The Dunedin men apSeared to be entirely out of it, OUR-oared Inbiqgbb Baob ; entrance, 20a. First prize, £l6, with £5 6s added by Union Steamship Company; second, £5. Arawata (L. 8.0.) S. Bamford, stroke; P. Childs, 8; B. Weatherall, 2 ; J. M'Donnell, bow; J. Donovan, cox ... 1 Nil Desperandum (U. 8.0., Dunedin). A. Binnie, stroke; J. Mercer, 8; G. Lindsay, 2; J. Lindsay, bow; W. Quinn, cox ... f Ripple (O.B.O.) t The race was started about half-past seven by Mr Packard. The course was the same as for the previous one, about two miles. The Ripple, which had the outside position, got the lead at the start, and kept well clear of her opponents, but the latter managed to foul off Baker’s point, in consequence of which a protest was afterwards entered by the Dunedin men. Notwithstanding this accident, (here was an exciting finish, which resulted in the Arawata passing the judge first, followed by the other two so eagerly that a dead heat was declared.
