THE CATHEDRAL FONT.

The font presented to the Christchurch Cathedral by the late Dean Stanley, in memory of hi* brother. Captain Owen Stanley, woe placed in its position yesterday. It is made of white stone from the Cattle Hill quarries. Various sacred symbols are carved on the side*, and the font bears the follow Log inscription ; “ To the memory of Captain Owen Stanley, B.N. By whose enterprise, A.D. 1840, this island was secured to the British Empire. Thi* font was erected A.D. 1881, by hi* brother, Arthur Penrbyn Stanley, D;an of Westminster.” " Blest hour in A karoo. Bay, When England's Hag Erst won the way/ On these bright shores for Bntiah youth. To grow in Christian grace and truth. O’er church and home, o'er fell and fioot. The fount and origin of goo!.” The font is supported by a pillar and foot of white stone, around which are four small columns of grey Hoon Hey stone, with white stone pediments and capitals. The whole rests on a base formed of a slab of Hoon Hay stone. The maker is Mr J. Stocks, of Christchurch.
