COURTENAY HORTICULTURAL SOCIETY
This Society'# Annual Show wae held on Tuesday last on a eeotton belonging to the Courtenay Steam ibreebing Company, who kindly placed it, and alto, their abed, at the disposal of the Committee. The shed was used for staging the vegetable* and fruit, as the tent was completely filled with tbs flower*. The judge*, Messrs Crooks, Turner, Jackman, Tummr, and Spicer, expressed themselves as highly pleased with the exhibits generally, particularly with some of the vegetable*. A strong north-wester prevailed during lbs day, and at one time there was imminent danger of the tent collapsing. Fortunately, however, this was prevented, though some of the plant# were blown down. A Bazaar in aid of the funds of 8t Matthew's Church was held in the Orange Hallj also, a Museum in the library, at which wo* exhibited a fine eoUeo* tion of curtoeities from India, Burmab, South Africa, and other parts, kindly lent by the Hon Colonel Brett, Mr T. H. Anson, and Captain Tosswiil, ami which proved a great attraction. A dance in the Orarge Hall, which wae kept up to the small hours, was a very pleasant conclusion to the day’s amusement.
