SOUTH WAIMAKARIRI BOARD OF CONSERVATORS.
The ordinary monthly meeting of the South Waimakariri Board of Conservators was held at (heir office, Hereford street, at 8 p.m. yesterday; present—Messrs J. L. Wilson (Chairman), F. Jones, W. White, jun., H. Atkinson, fl- W. Penman, B. W. England, W. Attwood, and T. S. Lambert. BTATB OB THB BTVBB. The weekly reports of the Overseer on the state of the river, sent in since last meeting, were laid before the Board. They stated that the river was low, and that no repairs of any consequence had been required. Mr England stated on behalf of the Works Committee, that there was no formal report (0 make. The state of the river was satisfactory, and no work required to be be done. Mr F. Jones stated that the gone groin faced with concrete which had been recently erected, had answered admirably, and was considered by the overseer one of the best works on the river. Mr Jealthe overseer, who was in attendance, stated that the groin was a vary useful piece of work. The shingle'brought down by the river had filled in the bottom at the back of the groin. It was remarked that the success of the groin most be very satisfactory to the Board, as it was only intended as an experiment. ACCOUNTS, Accounts amounting to £430 6s 2d were passed for payment OOaBBBPONDENCE. The following were read:— From Mr James Wilson, Tsldhurst, stating that the Templeton Bead Board had been removing shingle from the reserve leased by him, and requesting the Board of Conservators to inform him how to act in the matter, as fclio Clerk to the Bead Board had told him that they were about to have portions of the land he bad leased reserved to them for getting shingle from. It was resolved to instruct the Secretory to write to Mr Wilson, stating that the Hoad Board had no right to remove shingle from the reserves.
It was also resolred to write to the Templeton Boad Board, requesting an explanation of their action, and forwarding a copy of Mr Wilson’s letter. It was decided to instruct Mr Jeal to visit the reserve in question, and report to the Board as to the quantity of shingle taken. Prom Mr A. H. Maclean, Inspector of Audit, in reply to the Board’s letter of Oot. 23, and stating that he had not yet received any communication from the Colonial Secretary with respect to fixing the remuneration to be paid to local bodies for collecting the Waimakariri rates. As soon as the instructions were received be would communicate with the Board. ... The Secretary said that after receiving the above he hod sent a telegram to the Colonial Secretary, and had received an answer to the effect that instructions had since been given to the Inspector of Audit on the subject. Ho further advice had been received on the subject. jfrom the tnuiogw of tho Union Bank of Australia, intimating the receipt of £B?27s6d from Government, to be placed to the credit of tho Board. There being no farther business, the Board adjourned.
