1 IEST'ABEiSHMfiNT X)F A MUSEUM. , ' A. general meeting of the above bodyy which■ was mimerously attended by the members, was held in the library of the society on Monday evening, to consider, according1 to notice duly' given, the best means-of establishing, a *nuseum in connection with' the, institution. Dr. Donald took the; chair, and explained; shortly the purpose with which the-: meeting had been summoned; He also took.occasion/during the discussion which accom-"; panied some of the resolutions which follow I 1 ,to express his opinion^ upon them. . " : Mr, Alport moved the first resolution" which was .seconded by Mr. Willcox, as follows :—•■. •: ... ■; ■ ..■ • ■ ■■-■.■;■■;...;.•'..: .. . ".That this meeting deems it desirable that an attempt, be made to a museum of Natural History, in. connection with the Lvttelton Colonists'! Society and Literary Insti-' .tutioii."-. ■■-■■ ■■• ■.■•■': .)••, , .. : ;,. .-. . ; This resolution elicited from those present i some.remarks as to the desirability of the undertaking, to which, there was no dissent- '. lent, and the a-esolution was accordingly carried unanimously. ° •.->' rJi c nSe °Ond resolution was proposed by Mr. K-.-Millsland' seconded by Mr.- W. GralKim, . in.the following terms: ,"..that: a committee, of Messrs.:. Ward. Banks, Mills, Alport, Mayo, Graham, Bavfeild, Wilcox, Donald, and Murphy, with power to add to their number, be appointed ■to carry out the foregoing resolution." j Carried unanimously. -• i
The following1 was the third resolution proposed by Mr. Bayfeild, seconded by ftl/ Weedon, and carried unanimously :__ " That the committee be empowered to make! bye-laws (to be submitted for the approval of th.c, general committee), to obtain specimens, to appoint an honorary curator and to transact the business of the njuseum." . JVI r. Al port then moved an additional resolution, which Was seconded by Mr. BayfeilrJ as follows r— "That the committee be empowered to collect sujbscriptions in aidof the expenses attendant upon carrying out the proposed undertaking/ ;i :•.■ ,\ ; After: a few remarks by Mr. Alport, on the necessity of contributing to, tntf undertaking and a short conversation on the general subject' the resolution was earned and the meeting separated. , , j. ,• - r; ....
