WANGANUI.
THE SEPARATION MOVEMENT,
A public meeting was held .at the Rutland Hotel, cm Thursday therl6th June, Thomas Powell, Esq., in the chair. Thechairman read the advertisement calling the meeting, which was held " for the purpose iot" taking into consideration the expediency of iui tnediate separation'of these districts from the Wei lington Province, and erecting tliem into an inde pendent province "
1. It was moved by Mr. John Gibson and feconrled by Mr. George Wright,— " That this meeting is decidedly of opinion that immediate separation from the Province of Wellington will be the most conducive tb our interests; and aetine under, that feeling, do hereby resolve that a petition be immediately prepared for signaiure by the electors to his Excellency the Governor for that purpose." 2. An amendment was moved by Mr. Watt, M.P.G. and seconded by Mr. Patters m, —•
" That this meeting do stand adjourned until this day six months."—Carried. Several speeches were delivered by advocates and opponents of separation, the most prominent of which was one by Mr; Fox, member for the district, who voted in favour of tha adjournment. The Reparation of Wanganui from Wellington is therefore still left to loom in the future.
The Bridge.—On the same Aaj (ttoe 16th) his Hnnov the Superintendent, who was on a visit to Wanganui, "drove" the first pile of the Wanganui River Bridge. A large number of the inhabitants Witnessed'the ceremony from the banks of the
river; and on Friday, the 17th, a public ball and supper was held at the Eutland Hotel in commemoration of the event.
The Overland Mail from Wellington.— Mr. Eager, postmaster, Otaki, has taken the new mail contract at £900, without any stipulation as to weight.
