AUCKLAND,

By the last mail from the north we have a copy of the ' NevrZealander' of the 15th ultimo, from which we take ithe following paragraphs : — "" Tabanaki Beef."—Steam is proving of some considerable advantage to the Taranaki farmers. It riot, only'affords them, more ready means of sending their sheep to Auckland—where there is always a ready market.-r-but also the means of executing orders to send up prime beef, already slaughtered, to the,, same market. Mr. Holmes, butcher, of this city, was the first to open up this branch of trade with our Taranaki neighbours, who through the aid of steam, are now brought within some fifteen hours' distance of Onehunga. Seeing that commercial relations between the two Provinces are thus likely to become so much more extensive, we cannot but think the Steam Corap.my would do well to reduce the fare from Auckland to New Plymouth, and vice versa: such reduction would greatly increase the amount of passeiigertraffic; whereas the present high rates are all but prohibitory unless. it# cases of necessity. Many parties, would pay a visit to New Plymouth, were it but to obtain a sight of Mount Egmont, provided the fare was more moderate than is now the case. ■" • ■ . ■ ' -':..""■..■■■•

Afpeoaching Departure op' Bishop Pompallier for Rome.—We are informed that the Eight Key. Dr. Pompallier, the. venerable- Roman 'Catholic Bishop of Auckland, accompanied by the Rev. Walter McDonald, one of the curate 3of St. Patrick's Cathedral, has taken his passage on board the fine French whaler, General D'Hautpoul, now in Auckland harbour. Dr. Pompallier also takes with him two students, whom Pope Pius IX. has admitted into the College of the Propaganda at Rome, to study for the priesthood. One is a European, Mr. Michael Field, son of a colonist; the other isa New Zealander, named Kereineta, from Hokianga. One of the objects of the Bishop's visit to Rome is to obtain the aid of more clergymen of the Roman Catholic Church,.who, will be employed as auxiliaries in this Province; and another, with a view to increase the means of-education of the youth of his church here, to procure the services in this Province of some of the Brothers of the Christian Schools.:

Messrs. Tizavd's. new steamer, made her appearance on Monday last, and is.now anchored off the entrance of Shoal Bay. We have not been on hoard yet, and can only at present say that she is a very long, low, sneaking looking craft. She is not the first; steamer built in, Auckland, as erroneously stated by the 'Southern Cross/The first was built T)y Messrs. Stone.and Langfbrd, and fitted by the late Mr. Bourne, of the Queen street Foundry.
