On Friday last, 31st December, Captain Hinds of '.he ship Metacom, which left Akaroa in December. 1357, paid that port another visit, having left his ; hip outside under easy sail. The purpose of his ■visit was to ascertain'the whaling news of the coast, find the probable time at which potatoes and other vegetables would be obtainable. He gives the fol- • riwing report of ships which have visited Akaroa curing former years:— Napoleon lit, Morel, lost on 20th May in the Arctic, Sea, about 20 miles north of St. Paul's, by collision with the ice. Total loss, save a few barrels
oil taken out of her by the Hercules, of Bragunza. Crew all saved. , Arrived in .Honolulu. 2nd September, the Coultuucourr, having only increased her number of barrels by 200. 113 th October, General D'Hautpoulo Dannandaritz, from the Arctic, with 110 barrels sperm, 2100 barrels whalo, and 25,000 lbs. bono, of last season, and 80 barrels sperm, 900 whale, and 12,000-lbs. bone, of this season. The best fished ship of the season. ' The Eliza F. Mason, Captain Smith, and our old friend the Milo, Captain Soule, have both sustained their reputation and done well; but their exact quantities are unknown. The season has been very disastrous; and very unprofitable. More than 50 ships have returned without a barrel. The Metacom has taken only 500, and having suffered considerable1 damage by the ice, has had to disburse large sums for repairs. The ships may be expected in Akaroa in all March. *
