TASMANIA.

The 'Melbourne" -Herald' has 4h& following from Tasmania:—

Captain . Thomson of the ' Acis,' a gentleman well known ; in the Australian-trade, having •administered a severe beating to ".the Rev. Mr. Roberts, the author of a pamphlet-upon the peculiarities'; religious and ethical, of the-Tasman-ians, has been fined 405., at the Hobart VTown Police Court. -The • printed lucubrations of the Rev. gentleman in question had excited against him the animosity of the colonists to. such an extent that his solicitor applied to the court for-protection for his client against the fury of the mob. The police magistrate, Mr. Tarleton, remarked, respecting this application, that if a person chose to stir up a hive of bees with a long pole; he must expect to be stung by some of them. The reverend gentleman, probably recalling to his mind the egg demonstration with which the departure from-the colony a few years back of a certain ci-devant Melbourne editor was made significant, and apprehensive that his own exit might be honoured- with a similar ovation, preferred to forfeit his money deposited by him to defray the cost of his transfer to Sydney by the steamer Tasmania, to encountering any risk of the kind. He was probably right, for the papers inform us that a large number of-Hobart .^Townies assembled on the wharf, in all probabiiity-with the object of speeding the parting guest after a fashion peculiar to a Tasmanian mob.
