The width of the River is 1290 feet from bank to bank.' The ground on each side of the River is flat for some distance, and the banks are on a level with the line of the highest freshes. The ordinary water line is eight feet, and the deepest part of the channel twelve feet be!o«r the banks. > . The bottom of the River is a shifting bed of shingle at a depth of from lour to twelve fret below the banks, resting on clay at a further depth of four feet and upwards*. The soil of the banks is sand and light loom. The material of the Bridge is left to the discretion of competitors. . Competitors will attend especially to the following points :—• Risk of scouring the foundations. Danger from drift timber in freshes. Difficulty of securing the banks. Simplicity of construction.
