MUNICIPAL MEETING.
An adjourned public meeting of the residents in Lyttelton took place at the Town Hall, on Thursday evening, for the purpose of adopting a memorial on the subject of obtaining a Municipal Institution. The chair was occupied by Mr. I. T. Cookson, and the following memorial, having been proposed by Dr. Donald and seconded by Mr. Bayfeild, was adopted almost 7iem. con. :—
"TO HIS lIOXOR THE S [TPEPaNTENDJEXT OF THE I'EOVINCE OF CANTERBTJKY. " The petition of the undersigned inhabitants cf Lyttelton, humbly sheweth, —- " That there is at present no recognised body through whom tho inhabitants can express their views and wishes as regards the expenditure of public money in tbe making u.nd maintaining the roads and streets and other public ways and water-courses.
" That there is no local authority for overseeing the local affairs of the community, for verifying the weights and measures, for arranging for the extinction of fires, the suppression of nuisances, and other matters of great importance. " The undersigned therefore pray that an honorary municipal board be established for Lyttelton and iu suburbs, to be chosen by annual election from the constituency, to which board shall be confided the supervision of the expenditure of any sum voted by tha Provincial Council for the pnrposes of the town, and for the control of matters of local interest."
Dr. Donaxd then proposed, and Mr. BayFEILD seconded the following resolution, which was also carried without opposition. —'" That the Committee be instructed to obtain signatures to the foregoing memorial, and forward it to His Honor the Superintendent." A "vote of thanks to the chairman was then carried by acclamation. The business of the meeting having been thus quickly despatched, those present took the opportunity of calling upon Mr. Waed to give a sketch of the proceedings of the General Assembly. Mr. Waed complied with the gen.eiM.l request, and gave a Humorous and rapid outline of the principal business of the Session, together with personal impressions and observations on the prominent characteristics of the several provinces visited during his absence.—■ concluding amidst tbe applause of tbe meeting.
