Thihd Judge foe New Zealand.—The last mail brought the news that the new puisne judgeship for this colony has been tilled up by the appointment of Mr. Alexander James Johnston, described in the Law List as of the Temple, a special pleader, and belonging to the northern circuit. Mr. Johnston's appointment is understood to be for Wellington and Nelson, and Mr. Gresson will in that case act for Canterbury and Otago. The Spmakersiiii'.—lt is genovally understood that her Majesty has expressed her intention of conferring tho same honor upon the Ilouso of .Representatives of Now Zealand as upon other colonial legislatures, by ollcring

knighthood to Mr. Clifford the Speaker of the present and former House.

Mr. J. C. Watts Itussell of this province has been appointed to a seat in the Legislative Council.

The honorable Mr. Tancred has been appointed Secretary for Waste Lands, with a seat in. the Executive Council of the colony.

The Provincial Council of this province is further prorogued from the 3rd Sept., to the Ist of October.

We are glad to observe that a Land, Building and Investment Society has been started at Christchurch. A similar institution has for some time been working with great success in Lyttelton. The Christchurch society has begun very prosperously, ninety-nine shares having been subscribed for at the first meeting on Wednesday evening last; now that publicity has been given to the undertaking, a great many more subscribers are expected. The objects of this very useful society will be found stated in. our advertising columns.
