To tJie Editor of the Lyttelton Times. 'Sik,-—I was pleased to find by a short notice "in your local intelligence on Saturday that you disagree with the butchers' advertisement raising the price of meat. The matter is totally for, and should be met by the inhabitants of this town starting a company in self -defence. If. 20, or 25 parties would co-operate meat could be supplied at the rates recently prevailing, and leave ample margin for expenses. It would be very easy to salt surplus quantities to be sold at cost price, if the whole of the meat •slaughtered should not be immediately sold. The same plan I think might also be adopted ■in reference to bread. Is it fair with only the cost of carriage of flour from the Plains that we •should pay 3d. per quartern more than the •Christchurch prices? Competition there has lowered the price, and let us not submit to be imposed upon in Lyttelton. Yours obediently, CASH PAYMENTS. August 9, 1858.
