RELIEF OF LUCKNOW.
Alexander Maclagan has written the following song upon the slogan of the Highlanders, heard by a-Highland woman through the roar of the battle on the first relief of Lucknow.

'Mid the thunder of battle, the groans of -the ■■> dying, '; :■-..• '■ The wail of weak women, the shouts of brave men, A poor.Highland maid sat sobbing and sighing, As she longed for the peace of her dear native glen.. ... .. _■ .... ;.; .. ' ; ! But there came a glad voice to the ear of her heart, r The foes of .auld Scotland for ever will fear it! 'We are saved! we are saved!' cried the brave Highland maid, "Tis the Highlanders''slogan I O dinna ye hear it?' ' Chorus—Dinna ye hear it? dinna ye hear it? High o'er the battle's din, dinna ye hearit? r High o'er the battle's din, hail it and f cheeiNitJ, - : * 'Tis the Highlanders' slogan! O dixm a ye hear it?' A moment the tempest of battle was hushed, But no tidings of help did that moment reveal; Again-to their shot-shattered ramparts they rushedj ;•■•■• : ; ;•■■/ : . Again roared the cannon, again flashed the ■:■■■ steel! .-■■: ; ... .-.•■■■.• .. . -.- : : ■■:..•.;.--. . Still the Highland maid cried, Let us welcome the brave! , .< . . ; . The death-mists are thick, but their claymores will clear it! The war pipes are pealing ' The Campbells are coming;' ; They are charging and cheering! Q dinna ye hear it; !
