The Ocean Queen, which had sailed from Heathcote river for Wellington on the 10th of April, and which lias been long given up for lost arrived at Wellington, all safe, on the 10th inst., about two hours before the sailing of the Emerald Isle. Captain Oakes, of the latter vessel informs us that the Ocean Queen had been driven off to sea, distance unknown, there being no reckoning kept, and on changing course, and sailing for New Zealand, she made the Chatham Isles, which the Captain did not know until he landed. She sailed afterwards and made Cook'sStraits, but there the land on account of haze was also unknown to the Captain, but the weather clearing up a little, he made Port Underwood, whence he came to Wellington as above stated. They were so short of fuel on board that they had to burn the topmast for cooking purposes. The French ship, Le Tour de Pin, is at Piraki for the season's Bay whaling. The Maories there have been fast to a humpback whale, but did not succeed in killing it.
The brig Spray from Lyttelton had arrived at Wellington on the 4th, and the Schoner Lady of the Lake from Christchurch, on the 6th inst.
A Steam Whale-boat. —New Bedford (MASs.)October 20.—The ship America, Captain Bryant, which sailed from this port on Wednesday last, for a whaling voyage to the North Pacific Ocean, carried a whale boat which is propelled by steam. The boat measures two feet longer and one foot wider than the usual size of whale-boats. The machinery is placed in the after part of the boat, and weighs about 700 pounds, consisting of two oscillating engines. The wheel is 4ft. Bin. in diameter, and 12 in. wide. Lyman's gas and steam-generating cylinders are used instead of boilers, being filled I with nitra of soda and calcined charcoal. The \ steam and gas. it is believed, will prove amply sufficient for the purposes required, and can be made to act in from three to five seconds. The ordinary speed of whale boats is five miles an hour, while the one propelled by steam attained, on trial at New York^ 12 miles. An engineer goes out in the ship to take charge of the apparatus, and in the event of the experiment proving successful, owners of other ships will doubtless avail themselves of. the advantages to be derived.—Skipping and Mercantile Gazette.
