Markets.

NEW SOUTH WALES,

Commercial advices from Sydney are not very important. The following notice is from the Empire of January 6, at which date the November mail had not arrived :—

Trade generally is very inactive ; the arrival of the mail will, we hope, brine: us cheering: intelhgence.

There was a fair meeting on 'Change to-day, but we still remarked a want of buyers, while on the other baud sellers were numerou&ly represented; a few transactions of medium importance took place. In the spirit market there is no enquiry for brandy; 28 o. p. rums can be bought at 55.; case gin, key brand, is selling at 17s. 6d. to 18s., according to quanfcitj'.

We hear of no transactions in Eastern produce ; a very general opinion prevails in favour of a further decline in sugars; we notice a considerable parcel of Pampanga advertised for auction on the 7th ; this will in a great measure test the market.

Teas are quiet, the quantity of green in first hands is very nominal. Congous are variously quoted according to quality. There is some enquiry for oilmen's stores, but prices although apparently high do not leave any profits to importers.

The Simla may now be looked for hourly; we trust her intelligence will be satisfactory ; it will be without doubt most important to our future prospects. "WELLINGTON.
