Sus bearing date the fourteenth day of July, j n the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and fifty-seven, hath been directed to me Bel. field Woollcombe, Esquire, as Returning Officer for the District of Tiinaru, requiring and commanding me to cause to be elected by the voters duly qualified for that purpose, freely and indifferently, and in manner and form by law pre^ scribed, a legally qualified person to serve as a Member of the Provincial Council for the said District of Timaru: Now, therefore I, th e said * Belfield Woollcombe, do hereby, in pursuance of ' the said recited writ, give notice that a public meeting of the electors of the Timaru District will be holden at the Resident Magistrates' Office,'Timaru, on Friday, the 6th day of November next, at noon, for the purpose of nomil nating a person to serve as a Member of the Provincial Council for the said Timaru District • and, in the event of a' poll being demanded for the candidates or any of them, such polling shall take place on Monday, the 9th day of November next, at the following polling places viz., ' At Mr. Macdonald's station, at the residence of Mr. John Hayhurst, and at the Office of the Resident Magistrate,^! mar v. Now, therefore, I, the said Thomas Rowley, do hereby, in pursuance of the said recited writ, give notice that a public meeting of the electors of the Avon District will be held at Mr. Gregg's barn, Riccarton, on Thursday, the sth day of November next, at noon, for the purpose of nominating four persons to serve as. Members of the Provincial Council for the said Avon District ; and, in the event of a poll being demanded for the candidates or any of them, such polling shall take place on Friday, the 6th day of November, at the following polling places, viz :— At the School Room, Papanui, and at Mr. Gregg's Barn, Riccarton. Gentlemen,—On my return from Wellington,^ I have the honour to acknowledge tfie receipt of the above requisition; and I beg to return you my sincere thanks for the flattering manner in which you have requested me to come forward as one of your representatives in the ensuing Provincial Council of this Province. As I am largely interested in the prosperity of your town and district both individually and indirectly, I should have felt it my duty to have accepted your invitation had I been on the spot at the time. I am glad, however, to observe that you have as candidates three gentlemen, residents in the place, who I feel are more entitled to your suffrages from long residence and local experience than myself, and I therefore most respectfully decline coming forward at the present time.
