In complying with this request, I can only refer you to my past conduct during the time I had the honor of a seat in the late Council, as a guarantee of my constant attendance and faithful discharge of my duties as a member, and alsoof my anxious desire to promote the advancement and prosperity of this, the most important province of New Zealand, and the best interests of the neglected town and port of Lyttelton. Although I have never appeared before you in any public capacity, and consequently may be unknown to some of you, yet I do not think it necessary to give any lengthened exposition of my political principles here,'as that can be better done at the hustings. If you do me the honour to elect me, however, I will devote my attention to promoting the particular interests of this District, as well as the Province in general.
