Christchurch, to the following resolutions ; agreed upon at the Conference of the Bishops, i Clergy^-and Laity, held at Auckland, June sth, • 1857. Every licensed Clergyman, with the Churchwardens in the district, or if there be no j! Churchwardens, then with two . Laymen, !ielected' by the 'Members,of, the Church in his |; district, shall be Revising Officers for the folj: lowing purposes, viz:— j 1. To ascertain the names of all communicants within their district who may be willing ;to attend, if elected, as Representatives at the j'first'general Synod. I 2. To forward the names of any such per- ;; sons, if they can be ascertained, to the Bishop ■ of the Diocese, or any officer acting by his appointment. Number of Lay Representatives required for the Province of Canterbury :— Christchurch 1 Lyttelton 1 Country and Akaroa 1 Total 3 The Rev. James Wilson has been appointed by the -Bishop to receive the names of those who may be willing, it" elected, to serve as Representatives, and will forward the voting papers ! to the Revising Officers. SIR,— We the undersigned, Electors and others, beg to request that you will, allow yourself to be put in nomination at the ensuing election as a member to represent the Port Victoria District in the Provincial Council; feeling assured that you will, .to the utmost^ of your ability, use your best endeavours to advance the interests of the Port Victoria District, and the Province generally, We pledge ourselves to support you in the event of your acceding to our wishes. Gentlemen,—A requisition having been rather unexpectedly placed in my hands wishing me to put myself in nomination to represent your interesrs in the Provincial Council, I accept your invitation, and will use my best encleavour to promote the interests of the province, if returned. . Although I might wish that I had a much larger portion of time to. devote to your service, and therefore be a more efficient representative, yet knowing how few there are in a more fortunate position in this respect than myself, I feel it my duty to accept this flattering mark of your confidence; and will, if I am returned, exert myself to the utmost of my ability in furthering the prosperity of the district.of Port Victoria and the interests of the Province of Canterbury. Representatives possessing these claims on you are desirable; yet, as you are aware, it is not absolutely necessary that your choice should be confined to them.
