VICTORIA.
The Goveehoe.—The 'Argus' states that "the rumour of Sir Henry Barkly's retirement has been again put into circulation, and with the appearance of vrai-semblance that it is difficult to contradict. It is, moreover, said, that he has no sympathy whatever with the policy of the present Cabinet, and that he tabes little pains to conceal his disapproval." ■ Respecting the late outrages at Buckland, the ' Ovens and Murray Advertiser' states,--" We understand it is the intention of a large number of the Chinese whose property was burned on. the Buckland in the late riot to apply to the Government for compensation for the loss they have sustained. We have seen several whose claims will amount to about £500,' and who are
resolved to use every exertion to bring their case before the Executive. The bulk of those whose property is consumed are naturalized subjects, they speak the English language with remarkable purity, and are, besides, provided with the protection ticket."
