CHURCH OF ENGLAND MEETING.
A Public Meeting of members of the Church in Lyttelton was held on Wednesday evening last, the 19th instant, pursuant to advertisement, to take into consideration. what steps would be desirable for the rebuilding of the Parish Church of Lyttelton. The meeting was not numerously attended, there being not over thirty persons present. The Rev. B. W. Dudley took the chair and opened the proceedings with prayer. The first resolution was shortly proposed by Mr. Hall, seconded by Mr. Mayo, and carried without discussion.
" That in the opinion of this meeting it is desirable that steps should be taken without further delay for the rebuilding of the Parish Church at Lyttelton."
The next resolution was more fully discussed, as it proposed to restrict the construction to timber as a material. A communication was produced from Messrs. Mounfort and Luck, architects, to the effect that a building of stone would cost about 50 per cent, more than one of wood. A strong feeling was however manifested that designs and tenders should be called for in either material: and the_ following resolution was accordingly adopted in amendment: Proposed by Mr. Habgbeaves and seconded by Mr. Campbell :-—" That designs be invited for a Church capable of holding 400 worshippers, to be built of wood or stone, and not to cost more than £1200'; such designs to be submitted for approval to a public meeting; and that tenders be afterwards invited for the construction of the building, according to the approved design." During the consideration of the above resolution a rieat.plati of a stone church was exhibited by Mr. Ghaney/from whose statement it appeared that such a building could be constructed for the amount of money contemplated to be raised for the church, viz. £1200. The Rev. B. W! Dudley also took occasion to state that in the event of a stone edifice being constructed, he should raise his contribution to the amount of £100, and that other persons, he knew, were prepared to act in a similar manner. The next resolution was put and carried without discussion. . Proposed by Mr. BaYfield and seconded by Mr. Banks :— " That the Incumbent and Churchwardens be requested to carry put the above resolutions. The Rev. Chairman then dismissed the meeting with prayer.
