Local Intelligence.
There is very little to talk about to-day. The province is half awake on the communication question, and rubs its eyes wondering whether the Sumner road, so long dreamed about, has really a place among the things that are. We are able to say that to-day the preparations for his Honor's tandem drive between the two towns are complete. There is a good road, nowhere less than seven feet wide, and in its highest point not. 700 feet above the water level. No doubt a large number of the inhabitants of both towns will be present at the opening ceremonies. This declaration of a free passage by land between Lyttelton and Christchurch forms a happy moment for mutual compliment, and the fact of the existence of a road will be not only the opportunity for the expression of cordiality, but will be itself, we. are sure, the very cause that that sentiment shall last from this time forward. As for the ceremony of opening, we anticipate flags, bands, horsemen, pedestrians, ihe tandem, a lunch at Sumner, and a dinner at Lyttelton, with addresses, orations, and triumphal arches, ad libitum. We are requested by the road authorities to state that neither ropes spades nor pickaxes need be provided by the multitude. On Thursday last, at an auction sale at the Land Office, a few sections of Akaroa town land fetched the average price of £89 per acre.
