■ To the Editor of the Lyttelton Times. Sib,—By reading a report in your journal of the 15th instant, I, though an inhabitant of Akaroa, have this day only knowledge of a public meeting held there on tlie sth of this, month, "to take into consideration the Government proposition for establishing steam communication within the province, and otherwise to consider the advisability of underwriting the steamers according to the Government propositions."

As a resident of Akaroa, and being interested in steam communication, I cannot allow the motion carried so unanimously to pass current as expressive of the opinions of even a majority of the residents of that place who have taken the trouble to consider the " Government proposal ;" for, had fair notice and time been given for convening the said meeting, a discussion most assuredly would have arisen (whether invited or not), the result of which to the propositions moved and seconded would not have been to " carry them unanimously." ' With due deference to the constituents of that meeting, I beg to say that this assertion is strengthened by the explanation, subjoined to the report, of the feeliag of the meeting, which seems 1 to infer that they did not exactly know what they were about.

I am happy to see matters assuming a more tangible form, by the formation of corn-sanies who will, no doubt, with an efficient directory, give the country the desired communication; and receive, either by profitable returns or from th«_ Government, satisfactory remuneration for their capital invested, risks incurred, and services performed.

I am, sir,

Your obedient servant, LOOKER-ON.
