Correspondence.

To the Editor of the lyttelton Times. Sir,—You may readily suppose that I am much astonished to find that a letter should find insertion in your Newspaper, attacking, with the most scurrilous language, and under a feigned name, the scheme which I, together with His Honor the Superintendent and the Executive Council, have been endeavouring to arrange for the purpose of having local steamers. The tone and style of your correspondent is the opposite extreme to fair and open-handed discussion, and is directly opposed to what generally passes current in respectable communities. On my part I entered into the arrangement I have been negotiating with Government as an ordinary mercantile enterprise; but, in doing so, I also had much pleasure in thinking I was foremost in endeavouring to give niy fellowcolonists the great benefit of permanent and thoroughly efficient local steamers. It now appears likely that a company will meet with more general favour than private enterprise, and, having been solicited to do so, I have taken shares in and am giving my support to the company Messrs. Cookson, Bowler & Co. are forming. I may inform you, Mr. Editor, that I addressed my advertisement to the sheep-farmers, because I consider that their interest is the paramount interest in the colony. I remain, Sir, your obedient servant, Lyttelton, Aug. 17. FRED. BANKS.
