The debate on Education was renewed in the Council on Tuesday evening. Though by a previous vote fehe Denominational System was accepted as a general.principle, the whole question was ! practica% reopened on this occasion. A very natural cause lor- this was the fact that a great 'many members had been- considering the question in the interval, and had placed > their thoughts together: in the form of speeches, for the letting* off of which some occasion must be found. Mr. Hall had a cut and dried speech, .evidently of- this sort, and;of no. small dimensions, wherewith foe led the wayinto the; general debate, and gave the cue to the rest to follow, and trulj they availed themselves of it. Almost every member present spoke. We have not reported the speeches, for, speaking in"sporting 'phrase; the run was a tremendous.-one,; the ground rough and-heavy, the distance immense, and the -pace killing. Finally, the/ Council thought it best to follow the recommendation of the reverend gentlemen who had submitted to'it their experienced opinions, and only mended.np the grammar of their resolution.<,and a few other ' clerical" errors, ■ . :.

The final consideration of • the question was to have come off.on Thursday; but the error made in adjourning to that day, which was Ascension Day; was discovered too late .to -.be rectified, and probably Tuesday will be the appointed time. -The same evening is set apart for the consideration of the estimates, in the item of public works. ■ : ,

There are several little bills of this Session's litter still dropping into the world, aiicLstill .'to be nursed and nourished to maturity.1 A public building has to be knocked dovra in Akaroa, and another has to be constructed there, and there is a very little bill for each; and another very little bill providing fixed payraeut-s^ to the Superintendent : and the Provincial Council for iuture years. There is also a prospect oi' another bill or. two to spring from: subjects at present under consideration by the- select committees of the House. There are, J:ed ci, plenty of Hiibjects, not represented by bilis, bu'/ involving hours of debate, stretching to week { ot session.. .

The,w,eatfier puts a stop to any other occurrences of interest. Wind and rain and cold njixed together have, kept us tolerably uncomfortable during the past week, and there is every prospect of immediate winter. If the 15th ot May was.not precisely the day on which the rain began,; it w^is sufficiently near the mark still to maintain its reputation jus the St. Swithun of JJew.. Zealand. ; One fine evening of the week, last Tuesday, \vss seized .upon with great good fortune for a performance in the circus in Lyttelton, for the benefit,; of,'' Mr.'' Axtelle. The number of spectators was very large and the performances some of., the best we have witnessed here. To-flight, weather is appointed for the. joint benefit of Messrs. Gray, Bird, and Ching Laura, and Monday next for that of' Mr. On' Monday the Queen's birthday will t>e kept, the 24th being Sunday, the Bank and nil.the; public offices will be closed, and a general holiday established^
