Regatta Ball.—This, fete, given by the winners of the .prizes in the Lyttelton NewYear Regatta, canie off last Tuesday evening. The celebration jias been postponed till this time in order to obtain the attendance of as many as possible of the boatmen belonging to the coasting craffc; and it so happened, fortunately, that almost, or quite all of these vessels were just at this time in harbour or, in the Heathcote, so that the attendance of the persons concerned was very numerous. The ball commenced at about' eight o'clock in the evening, and continued till nearly six o'clock in the morning, with only the intermission of supper, which was provided with every elegance and abundance by Mr: Davis, of the Canterbury Hotel. The greatest goodhumour and gaiety prevailed throughout, and an intention is generally expressed'of- using every exertion to continue and improve tlie regattas m our harbour on the annual holidays, and of repeating this form of celebration after each event. ■'■"'.■

Me. Foley's Circus.—Mr. Foley, as will be seen by an advertisement in our columns, opens his performances in Lyttelton this evening. He has issued a diversified programme, and the novelty of the amusement will pi" course attract a large concourse of spectators who, if we can trust the reports irom the northern provinces, *re likely to be very much gratified. Mr Foley

is to give three more performances in this town, on Monday, Thursday, an,d Saturday of next week. ' '

Mr. Godley.—We hear from home that Mr. Godley, who has hitherto held a subordinate post in the War Office, has lately been appointed Deputy Secretary at War. We believe that this office gives him the direction of army finance.
