Correspondence.

To the Editor of the Lyttelton Times. ■ g lßj __]Vlly attention has been drawn to1 a letter which appeared in your paper on Saturdaylast, signed H. J. Cridland, and which reflects on 'my°conduct in reference to some transaction connected with Captain Harvey. lam not O j no . here to enter into the details or merits of the question, which has be?n twice heard before an impartial tribunal, and judicially decided. I will only observe that the facts as stated by Mr. Cridland are" very grossly garbled and mis- ! stated. The transaction in question had nothing ' whatever to do with my official position at the ! Land Office. It was a private matter of agreei ment and contract. The conditions of the ' agreement were violated by Captain Harvey, and, in terminating it, I have only exercised a ri°-ht to which I was morally and legally en- ! titled. I Your most obedient servant, ! W. G. BRITTAN. [ Christchtrrnh, Jan. 26, 1857.

To the Editor of the Lyitelton Times. Sir, —In your paper of the 17th instant, I see what purpoi'ts.to be a report,of .a case tried at the Magistrate's Court at Kaiapoi, in which I was the defendant. This report is.so grossly incorrect that I cannot allow, it to pass without remark. The defence attributed to me is purely imaginative, as I was not called upon to make any ; the Magistrate having dismissed the case immediately on hearing1 the, plaintiff's statement. The statement that the case has been settled by arbitration is equally false, as I should never think of allowing any, one to arbitrate as to whether I have the right to prevent persons trespassing on my land. Your obedient servant, JAMES WYLDE. [The statement in question was furnished to us by Mr. Eaton, the plaintiff in the case,'.who gave us permission to use his name, if required. Ed. L.T.] •
