Steam Communication.—-A large number of the merchants, traders, and bthers'ot this people of Lyttelton, interested in the establishment of steam communication .with theJnterjor of the province, met His Honor the Superintendent'by invitation^ in the' Halt, yesterday morning, to consult upon the b t est mpan^ of giving practical effect'to t^e laig %£ss °^ *^c Provincial Council, in that behalf. His Ho^LQf opened the business of the meeting % stating that he was desirous, as soon as possible, to carry out the wishes of the Council in granting the sum pf £5,000 for steaig/'but jtfia't "he desired to be informed by those most interested in the question, whether they were of opinion that the Government should perform tKe work, or that it should he left to the public io ,do so, with 'the a*ssi,stance of the'sum 'granted. Mr". Latter spoke at some length in explanation of .the views'held by himself and others who had met the day before to consider the .question. He stated that it was the general opinion that a steam service was much required, and would be undertaken by others, if not by the province, within one or two years.
