LYTTELTON PRICES CURRENT.

Tuesday, Sept. 9th, 1856. [Spirits, Wines and Tobacco quoted iii Bond, but all other articles (jf dutiable) dutj' paid.]

Trade has somewhat improved since last month, there being at present a moderate demand for general goods in small quantities. Increased importations of brandies may tend to lower prices below those quoted, and sales of small quantities only can be made at these quotations. Tar, with paints, oils, &c, can only be disposed of in small lots, at retail prices. In drapery and slops the market is dull. The effect of the new Tariff cannot yet be appreciated, except upon those goods where there is a marked increase of duty—as beer, tea, coffee, &c. It is certain, however, that the measurement system must have a prejudicial effect on the import of buky articles, and that, consequently, quotations of furniture, holloware, &c, will require considerable alteration. :
