The * xA"eHlntr*"Si ln.irpfiideiu ' < f that date lias the following news of the ir.r.rkets n\: i;i Melbourne. By the schooner Sea Serpent, Captain Hoskins, which arrived iv this Inrbonr, >>v Su:i(;;;y inorning last, we have received Melbimrn? papers up to ',hv
ISth, nit. The Sea Serpent has had a pleasant passage of 10 days having experienced remarkably fine weather during; the whole of the voyage. The jiotatoes taken to Port Phillip by her did not meet with a cood market, as they ouly realized 27s per ton, having cost 30s here, and the butter was sold for 10 i perlb. . The last has been a prolific season, m Australia, and vesetables of all kinds were abundant, consequently^ the prices were remarkably low. A change had, however, taken place in the price of grain, in consequence of intelligence received from South America of the partial destruction of the grain crops there, through the heavy rains that had fallen before the wheat had been harvested. The continuance of fine weather has contributed towards the firmer feeling in the import market which the advices by the Red Jacket imparted. These advices while mentioning the coutinued increase of tonnage for Australia, at the various ports of the United Kingdom, very generally repeat the information brought by the last two mails, that goods are not coming forward in like proportion. Several vessels, with large cargoes are some time overdue and the roads are not yet opened for the season ; but for ; vthese two facts a pretty general advance would have taken place, as stocks are by no means heavy in Melbourne, and are decidedly light on the gold fields. During the last few days cartase has been taken at about ten per cent, decline oif former rates, but this has not had the effect of bringing loading forward to any great extent. Orders continue to come in freely from the diggings with a limit as to cartage, which compels them to be held over for the present. t The 'ATgus' of the 18th ult, contains the following report of the Melbourne wool and tallow market; — Wool.—Notwithstanding the favourable advices received per Red Jacket, there appears to be an evident disposition on the part of shippers not to exceed former prices. A public sale has been held during the week, at which 289 bales were offered, and only about 50 bales sold; the remainder was, however, sold privately shortly after the conclusion of the sale. Our quotations are for scoured wools, 19d to 22d per lb. : handwashed and slipe, 14d to IGlddo. Tallow. —There is now considerable demand, for beef tallow for shipment, and for which £36 per ton can be readily obtained. We have sold during the week at our highest quotation. Mutton tallow is still very dull of sale, and will not now realize last week's rates. Prices are now ruling as follows, viz.:—For beef tallow, £35 to £37 per ton ; mixed do., 381. per ton , mutton do., 401. to 431. per do. Hides are still in good request at our quotations, which are as last, viz., for good country, salted, lls.; town cured, 15s 6d to 16s. J. H. CIo'JGH & Co., Wool-brokers, Sfc,
Wool.—About 250 bales have been offered by auction this week, priucipally scoured wool, together ■with one small lot of New Zealand fleeces, jvhich realised IS d. per lb. 4gjTALLOiv,—Heavy of sale. Good mixed in small parcels for colonial use has been sold for 351, but for a parcel desirable for shipment not more than 331. could be realised. HiDES.-The same as last week. Country, 10s to 13s; town cured, 14s to 15s 6d. It- M. Walker, Woplbroker. 32 Flinders-lane street.
