To the Editor of the " Lyttellon Times.''
Sir.—Through the instrumentality of our paternal local Government, our highway from the Port to the Plains has recently received a very serious addition to its difficulties and dangers. J allude to the wreck of the steamer "Alma." She now lies in almost mid-channel, the stump of her mainmast only appearingl at low water (having maliciously been cut short off). A vessel with a cargo, valued together at £1000, recently struck against this stump, and must have been inevitably lost, had not the master promptly ran her aground. Messrs. Executive & Co., are the responsible parties, and are bound to see the wreck cleared away. Their Solicitor will doubtless recommend them to do so at once, before they are sued for the value of one or more vessels and cargoes. The Clmstcbnrch storekeepers, who have to write off a considerable amount to profit and loss yearly, for damage and loss in transitu, should combine for the removal of this increased ris>k without delay.
The Government have, I hear, tons of powder in the magazine, and likely to remain there, until it becomes worthless, part of which might now be turned to good account. Your obedient servant, A Boat Owner.
